Support Small Business (and Your Sanity)

It’s a challenging time for all as we adjust to the new norm of quarantining at home and social distancing. The economic future is unknown for many, but especially for small business owners*. Here are some ways to support them:

*For my local peeps, I’ll be highlighting businesses on my Instagram page and story in the coming days and weeks, so be sure to check it out daily.

  • Most restaurants are now offering curbside pickup and delivery. You can’t cook every meal, every day…or at least, I don’t want to ;) Consider purchasing gift certificates for future use and as gifts. Also, inquire as to whether some of your favorite places have an excess that you can purchase. (We snagged some high quality steaks.)

  • Your gym or health club is likely offering reasonably priced Zoom or Facebook streamed daily classes. Some outlets are posting FREE online workouts. Share these with your friends, family and social media community to spread the word about them and inspire people to join when they reopen.

  • Local bookstores carry lots of classics, new releases and everything in between. Many authors have had to cancel their highly anticipated book launches and tours. Here’s a great chance to support them and escape with a great read. Don’t forget coloring books, puzzles and games, too. Many will accept your phone order and deliver curbside.

  • It’s a great opportunity to plan the decorating and organizing around your home that you’ve been putting off. Use the extra home time to virtually consult with a professional and peruse fabrics, styles and organizational techniques.

  • Many independent clothing and jewelry retailers will be happy to do some virtual shopping with you. Check with your local stores, as most are offering Zoom/FaceTime shopping or online access via social media or websites.

  • Businesses such as bakers, farmers, painters, etc. are all getting in on the delivery game! They’ll bring craft-based items to your doorstep to keep the little ones occupied and give parents a minute to breathe.

  • The online shops on Etsy are endless. Purchase fun crafts, checklists and schedules for homeschooling, journals and DIY kits.

  • If you have help with housecleaning or laundry or other home services, consider sending him/her/them a weekly check, if it’s within your means.

  • Your places of worship still need to pay their utilities. Send in your donations as you would when attending weekly services.

Please share YOUR ideas for keeping business plentiful in these challenging times. Also…let’s not forget to balance - all of us could use a little extra peace right now. Support others in whatever way we can. We are all in this together…and we will come out on the other side together.
